Tonino Guerra Italian screenwriter and collaborator ![]() A Short Message to a "Seventy-Year-Old Person" I am glad that my meditations will be read by a person who is ten years my junior. I can remember his look and handshake in Rimini, full of gentle melancholy caused by adversities and shock met with in this world lacking in ideals. Mr.Gorbachev, I venture to forward my silent cry from Pennabilli to you. A Cry from Pennabilli Our anxiety and concern for our neighbor are looking through narrow medieval windows, and so, our lips can only give birth to petty words falling down to our feet as rusty nails. Our cry should be made of mighty words, which will find the way to every heart. The words full of the water of life for peoples, animals and plants, suffering from thirst; the words reviving the gestures of hands frozen without work, gestures of craft; the words attentive to childhood that lost hope. In brief, these should be the words that are addressed not to an individual human being, whatever the color of his or her skin, but addressed to mankind at large in order to create a great collective idea.
